Introduction to Safety Valve
In industrial piping systems, pressure control is essential for equipment protection and safe operation. A safety valve automatically relieves pressure when it rises above the allowable limit, helping prevent pipe rupture, equipment damage, and production downtime. These valves are commonly installed on boilers, pressure vessels, water supply systems, HVAC systems, and fire protection networks.
Technically, safety valves use a fully mechanical mechanism that responds quickly to pressure increases without electrical power or external control signals. Their design emphasizes tight sealing, spring accuracy, and stable repeatability after multiple discharge cycles, ensuring long-term performance in demanding conditions.
Safety valves from Watts Water Technologies are highly regarded for strict engineering standards and proven global reliability. They offer precise set pressure performance, durable materials, and suitability for applications ranging from residential to industrial systems, making them a preferred choice for high-safety requirements.
Operating Principle of Safety Valves
To protect a system from overpressure, a safety valve relies on an automatic response mechanism based entirely on the balance between fluid pressure and spring force. When pressure inside the pipeline changes, the valve adjusts its opening position accordingly, maintaining pressure within the allowable limit without manual intervention or external control signals.
- Normal pressure condition: Spring force exceeds the force generated by system pressure. As a result, the valve disc seats firmly against the seat, keeping the valve fully closed. No fluid is discharged, and the system operates normally.
- Overpressure condition: When system pressure rises above the preset setpoint, the fluid force overcomes the spring force. The valve disc lifts immediately, opening the discharge outlet and rapidly releasing excess gas or liquid to reduce pressure.
- Pressure recovery condition: After pressure relief, system pressure falls back below the allowable limit. The spring returns the valve disc to its original position, the valve closes tightly again, and the protection cycle is completed.
Watts Safety Valve – Series C100XL
The C100XL series is a safety valve developed by Watts for hot water systems requiring combined temperature and pressure protection. It relieves pressure caused by thermal expansion during heating cycles, helping protect water heaters and hot water storage tanks with safe and reliable automatic operation.
Compared with many standard valves on the market, the C100XL series stands out with a Watts-designed thermostatic element that delivers high accuracy and proven durability in accordance with Australian standards. Its bronze body, stainless steel spring, and precision manufacturing ensure dependable long-term performance in residential and commercial hot water applications.
Below are the key technical specifications of the C100XL series:
- Valve size: DN15 – DN20
- Body material: Bronze alloy
- Relief pressure: 1000 kPa or 1400 kPa (depending on model)
- Relief temperature: 93°C – 99°C
- Thermostatic element: Proprietary Watts design with special thermal bonding coating
- Certification: WaterMark (AS1357.1 Standard)
