Technical Data
Introduction to Butterfly Valve
Butterfly valves are industrial valves used for shut-off, opening, or flow regulation of liquids and gases in piping systems. Their key characteristics include a simple structure, compact size, and fast operation, making them suitable for a wide range of installation scales. Compared to gate valves or globe valves, butterfly valves require less space, are lighter in weight, and are easier to install, especially in large-diameter pipelines.
In practical applications, butterfly valves are widely used in water supply and drainage systems, wastewater treatment, HVAC, fire protection systems, and various industrial utilities. Depending on the disc design, sealing material, and system requirements, they can function either as on-off valves or as control valves. Thanks to their quick response and minimal moving parts, butterfly valves help reduce pressure loss and improve overall system efficiency.
Watts butterfly valves are developed to meet demanding technical requirements in both residential and industrial systems. The products emphasize precision manufacturing, stable sealing performance, and high mechanical durability under continuous operation. With a wide range of models and multiple options for body materials, disc types, sealing materials, and actuation methods, Watts butterfly valves provide flexible selection for different operating conditions.

Operating Principle of Butterfly Valve
The operating principle of a butterfly valve is based on a quarter-turn (90°) rotation of the disc around a fixed shaft to control the flow through the pipeline. When force is applied to the actuator (lever, handwheel, or automated actuator), torque is transmitted through the stem to the disc. The disc (shaped like a butterfly) rotates within the valve body to vary the flow area.
During operation, the valve functions in the following states:
- Fully Closed (0°): The disc is positioned perpendicular to the flow direction and pressed tightly against the sealing seat. At this point, the fluid is completely blocked and cannot pass through the valve.
- Throttling (15° to 75° opening): The disc is rotated to an intermediate position. The flow rate is controlled depending on the opening angle of the disc. However, it is generally not recommended to keep the valve in this position for extended periods, as continuous flow pressure may cause vibration and accelerate seat wear.
- Fully Open (90°): The disc is aligned parallel to the flow direction, allowing maximum flow through the valve. Even in the fully open position, the disc remains within the flow path, resulting in a certain level of pressure drop.
