Technical Data
Watts gate valves are designed for full open/close operation through the vertical movement of the gate (disc), allowing straight-through flow with minimal pressure loss. The products offer high material durability, reliable sealing performance, and stable operation in water supply and fire protection systems. They are available in various configurations, including rising stem and non-rising stem designs, with metal wedge or EPDM-coated wedge options.
Introduction to Gate Valve
A gate valve is an industrial valve used to fully open or completely shut off flow in piping systems. Its distinctive design features a gate (disc) that moves vertically relative to the flow direction. When the gate is lifted, the fluid passes through freely; when lowered, the flow is completely blocked.
Gate valves are not intended for throttling. They perform best in fully open or fully closed positions. This design results in very low pressure loss, helping the system operate efficiently and maintain energy savings.
Among various brands on the market, Watts gate valves are considered a reliable choice due to their stable operation and long service life. The manufacturer focuses on precise engineering design, durable materials, and superior sealing performance, ensuring consistent efficiency even under high-pressure conditions or in large-diameter pipelines. This reliability positions Watts as a strong option in shut-off valve applications, especially for projects requiring high safety and performance standards.

Operating Principle of Gate Valve
A gate valve operates based on the linear (up-and-down) movement of the gate (disc). When the operator turns the handwheel or uses an actuator, the stem moves vertically, lifting or lowering the gate accordingly.
In the fully open position, the gate is completely lifted out of the flow path, creating a full-bore opening that allows fluid to pass through with minimal resistance. This helps reduce pressure drop and maintain stable flow within the system.
When the valve is closed, the gate moves downward and presses tightly against the valve seat, forming a secure shut-off point. This design enables high sealing performance, minimizes leakage, and ensures the safety of the entire pipeline system.
The full open/full close operating mechanism enhances durability and reduces wear during service. Depending on the design, gate valves are available in two main configurations:
- Rising Stem: The stem moves up and down along with the gate, allowing direct visual indication of the valve position.
- Non-Rising Stem: The stem does not change its external length during operation, making it suitable for installations with limited space.
Regardless of the configuration, gate valves are designed to operate best in fully open or fully closed positions and are not suitable for throttling. Operating the valve in a partially open position can cause flow turbulence, vibration, and accelerated wear of the gate, reducing the valve’s service life. Therefore, gate valves are typically used in applications requiring reliable shut-off, especially in large-diameter pipelines or high-pressure systems.
